Waymo Philadelphia

August 12, 2025

Great News for Philadelphia Residents and Tech Enthusiasts:

The streets of Philadelphia have seen a noticeable increase in Waymo cars – the company that is rolling out a robotaxi service in major U.S. cities. Currently, the vehicles are driving around the city center and highways with an engineer behind the wheel: this is the mapping and "familiarization" phase before the potential launch of the passenger service. For now, rides are not available to passengers in Philadelphia, but the mere presence of the fleet is an important signal of preparation for the next phase.

While Philadelphians are just getting used to electric cars with "lidars," full-fledged driverless rides are already available in other places. Waymo One operates around the clock in San Francisco (including Daly City and up to Burlingame), has been deployed in Greater Los Angeles, and has long been open to all residents of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The company is gradually expanding service areas in these cities.

The process of ordering is familiar to any user of taxi apps: you install the Waymo One app, confirm the zone, set the departure point – and the car will arrive without a driver. In Austin, you can connect to the service directly through the Uber app: there, the companies have launched a partnership integration, and users get Waymo as one of the car options.

The pricing picture is uneven and depends on the city, time, and route. According to recent comparisons, the average fare for Waymo is often slightly higher than that of traditional aggregators: a price aggregator study cited by Business Insider and TechCrunch showed that Waymo rides are on average a few dollars more expensive than comparable Uber and Lyft routes (about five to six dollars difference in San Francisco, and more during peak hours). At the same time, demand for robotaxis is growing due to the convenience and interest in a driverless ride.

What's next for Philadelphia? Judging by the current presence of cars on the roads, Waymo is collecting data and working out routes. The company has not announced official launch dates for the passenger service in the city, but the public testing phase is usually a step towards opening. We are keeping an eye on developments – and as soon as it becomes possible to call a robotaxi in our city, we will test the service and tell you in detail how it works here, at home.
