When IKEA PAX Is Not the Right Choice for Your Space

April 3, 2026

In recent years, the IKEA PAX wardrobe system has become a very popular solution for organizing closets and dressing rooms, and for good reason. It offers a wide variety of cabinet sizes, interior components, drawers, shelves, doors, finishes, and accessories. IKEA also provides a planning tool that allows you to design the layout virtually, place the units in your room, and choose the combination that looks best for your space.

However, despite all of its advantages, IKEA PAX is not always the best option. There are several important limitations to keep in mind before ordering.

1. Baseboards can create a serious installation problem

If your room has baseboards, IKEA PAX may not be the ideal choice. These wardrobes are designed to be secured to the wall for safety. If the baseboard creates a gap between the back of the wardrobe and the wall, proper anchoring becomes more difficult. In many cases, the baseboard would need to be removed or modified before the units can be installed safely and correctly — and that is not always possible or desirable.

2. Uneven floors can make alignment difficult

If you live in an older home and the floors are not level, it can be difficult to align two or more PAX units in a straight line. Before ordering, it is a good idea to check the floor with a level. Make sure the floor does not slope toward the center of the room and is not noticeably tilted to one side. Even a small unevenness can affect how the wardrobe frames line up, how the doors close, and how clean the final installation looks.

3. Ceiling height matters more than many people expect

Another common issue is ceiling clearance. Tall PAX units need enough room not only to fit in the space, but also to be assembled and raised into position. In rooms with low ceilings, bulkheads, soffits, or sloped ceilings, installation can become difficult or even impossible without changing the assembly method.

4. Walls are not always perfectly straight

In many homes, especially older ones, the walls are not perfectly flat or square. When installing multiple wardrobe units side by side, uneven walls can create visible gaps and make the entire installation look less precise. This does not always make PAX impossible to use, but it can require extra adjustments and realistic expectations about the final appearance.

5. Heavy customization is limited

IKEA PAX works best when your room fits the system reasonably well. If your space has unusual dimensions, corners, offsets, radiators, trim details, or other obstacles, the system may not give you the custom built-in look you want. In those situations, a custom closet solution may be a better investment.

6. Doors and accessories need room to operate properly

It is also important to consider whether there is enough clearance for doors to open comfortably and for drawers or pull-out accessories to function properly. In tight rooms, narrow walk-in closets, or spaces with nearby beds or furniture, the layout may look good on paper but feel awkward in real life.

IKEA PAX can be an excellent wardrobe system, but only when the room is suitable for it. Before placing your order, it is important to evaluate the walls, floor, ceiling height, trim details, and overall layout. A little planning in advance can save a lot of frustration later.
