The photo below shows one of my recent projects - the installation of a traditional fish sign on a home in Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood. The sign was securely mounted to a brick wall using masonry anchors, providing a durable and weather-resistant installation.
Many visitors to the neighborhood notice these fish plaques on houses and wonder where the tradition came from. The answer is closely tied to the history of Fishtown itself.
Fishtown received its name from the generations of fishermen who lived and worked along the Delaware River. In the 18th and 19th centuries, many local residents earned their living from fishing and controlled valuable fishing rights along large sections of the river. The neighborhood became known throughout Philadelphia for its fishing industry, and the name "Fishtown" has been in use for more than two hundred years.
Over time, the fish became an unofficial symbol of the neighborhood. As Fishtown evolved from a working-class fishing community into one of Philadelphia's most recognizable neighborhoods, residents began displaying decorative fish plaques and signs on their homes as a way to celebrate the area's heritage and local identity. Today, these signs can be seen throughout the neighborhood and have become a recognizable part of Fishtown's character.
