Ring Video Doorbell Powered by a Solar Panel
June 16, 2026
The solar panel powering this Ring video doorbell can be seen on the left side of the photo. It consists of three small solar cells and is designed to keep the doorbell's battery charged without requiring a wired power connection.
I originally installed this system several years ago. To be honest, I was somewhat skeptical that such a small solar panel would be able to generate enough energy to reliably power a video doorbell year-round.
A few days ago, the same customer contacted me again and asked me to relocate the doorbell to the other side of the door. During the visit, I had an opportunity to inspect the system and was pleasantly surprised to discover that the video doorbell was still working perfectly.
I asked the customer whether they had experienced any issues with the doorbell over the years. Their answer was simple: no problems at all. The doorbell had been operating reliably the entire time.
Out of curiosity, I checked the battery voltage with a meter and found that the battery was properly charged.
My conclusion is straightforward: if your front door is located on the sunny side of the house and you do not have wiring available for a traditional doorbell power supply, a solar-powered solution like the one shown in the photo is a practical and reliable option. In the right conditions, even a relatively small solar panel can provide enough energy to keep a modern video doorbell running for years with no maintenance.
