Upgrading a Google Nest Doorbell from 2nd Gen to 3rd Gen: A Small Device with a Big Security Upgrade
June 19, 2026
Smart home technology continues to move forward, and sometimes a small device by the front door can make a big difference in everyday home security.
Recently, we replaced a Google Nest Doorbell wired 2nd generation with the newer Google Nest Doorbell wired 3rd generation. At first glance, it may look like a simple doorbell upgrade, but this new generation brings several important improvements that can make a real difference for homeowners.
The biggest improvement is video quality. The new Nest Doorbell wired 3rd gen offers 2K HDR video, compared to 960p HDR on the 2nd generation model. Better video resolution can be very important when you need to clearly see a visitor, a delivery, a vehicle, or activity near the front door.
Another important change is the wider view. The 3rd generation model has a 166-degree diagonal field of view, while the 2nd generation model has a 145-degree diagonal field of view. The newer model also uses a 1:1 aspect ratio, which helps show more of the area around the door, including people, packages, and the ground near the entrance.
The new model also works with Google’s newer smart home features. According to Google, the Nest Doorbell wired 3rd gen supports built-in intelligent alerts for people, packages, animals, vehicles, and activity zones. With a Google Home Premium subscription, additional features such as longer video history, familiar face alerts, detailed event descriptions, and continuous video history may also be available.
One more reason this upgrade matters is long-term support. Google states that Nest connected home devices receive automatic security updates for at least five years from the date they start selling on the U.S. Google Store. For smart devices connected to your home network, software and security updates are not just a convenience - they are part of keeping the system reliable and protected.
At Yuri’s Services, we install and replace smart doorbells, security cameras, smart locks, thermostats, and other smart home devices. A small upgrade at the front door can make your home smarter, safer, and more convenient.
